Apps that raise your weights automatically
Most workout apps are logbooks. You decide what to lift and the app writes it down. A smaller group decides the next weight and reps for you. This page covers five of them.
BulkForged is our app, so weigh this page accordingly. Every statement about another product comes from that product's own website, read on 19 September 2026.
What "automatic" means
Every app here reads the sets you logged and proposes the next ones. They differ in three ways:
- The method. A published rule you can check, or a private algorithm.
- The record. Whether the app tells you why a number changed.
- The control. Whether you can overrule it.
Alpha Progression
- iPhone and Android.
- Its site says the algorithm gives a weight, a rep count and an intensity target for every set, based on what you lifted.
- The recommendations are part of its paid tier. Logging is in the free tier.
Fitbod
- iPhone and Android.
- Its site describes a proprietary algorithm that builds each workout, manages recovery and applies progressive overload.
- Fitbod picks the exercises as well as the weights, so each session can differ.
LiftTrack
- iPhone and Android.
- Its site says it proposes your next targets after each workout, and you accept them with one tap.
- It syncs workouts to Garmin watches through Garmin Connect.
Dr. Muscle
- Its site describes an AI personal trainer built by an exercise scientist.
- It lists progressive overload and daily undulating periodization among its features.
BulkForged
- Android, with a Garmin watch app. There is an iPhone waitlist.
- The method is double progression, and the rule is published: add reps until every working set reaches the top of the rep range, then add weight. See When should you add weight?
- Targets update on their own when you finish a workout. There is nothing to accept.
- Every change is written to a log that names the session and the sets it came from.
- Any target can be edited, and the app carries on from your number.
- It keeps your routine as you built it. It does not swap exercises between sessions.
What to check before you choose
- Can you see why a target moved? A number with no reason is hard to trust on a bad day.
- What happens after a poor session? One off set should not pull every target down.
- Does it respect your equipment? Machines have fixed pins. A target you cannot load is useless.
- Does it pick exercises, or only weights? Some lifters want variety. Others want the same lifts every week.
- Does it run on your phone and your watch?
